How to Get a Cheap Boiler Thanks to Green Grants
To help you investing in renewable energies and make your home more efficient, the British Government has established several grants. Those green grants all answer a specific need, that goes from investing in solar panels to replacing your old boiler or improving your house insulation.
As you may know, investing in a new boiler is often a big part of your house improvement budget as it can happen to be quite expensive. Some grants are especially made for boiler replacement, that can help you make the right choice and save money and increase efficiency while reducing your impact on the environment.
Below you will find the 3 main Government grants.
Boiler Replacement Allowance
The Boiler Replacement Allowance or BRA was created by the Ministry of Social Development to help households replace their old boiler with a new one, more eco friendly and efficient. This system was renewed by the Government until March 2016 so keep this deadline in mind and try to apply beforehand!
To benefit from this grant, you have to match several criteria that are listed below:
- You need to be the owner of your home and reside in it as your main property.
- You have to earn a gross income of less than £40,000 per year (this amount also includes your pension, job earnings, etc.).
- Replace an old gas or oil central heating boiler that has been in use for at least 15 years.
- Get instead a boiler rated A according to SEDBUK for its efficiency.
- Get your boiler installed by a Gas Safe Register technician.

Renewable Heat Incentive
This grant applies only for biomass boilers.
So if you are interested on another type of boiler, it is better to refer to the other grants listed in this article.
However, before applying for this grant, you have to get the Energy Performance Certificate to certify that your house meets the standards of an eco friendly and efficient property.

Green Deal Home Improvement Fund (GDHIF)
Depending on the home improvement that you want to carry out, the amount you receive from it will vary.
You need to install 2 improvements in your house to obtain the sum of £1,000. Those improvements can be for example, the following ones: double glazing, cavity wall and solid wall insulation, boiler installation.
